...he made some claims about trying to "break the record", or something to that affect. This was his first open road race, and he entered the unlimited class. The vets typically smile at these types of attempts, as they just underscore how hard it is to run the kind of speeds that he *wanted* to run. I wasn't there, so everything above is hearsay from message boards, but it is true that he entered the unlimited class on the first attempt. That's just not smart, 'cause it ain't easy. And looking at the parts list for the car, I see several things missing, including sufficient attention to the oil system, rearend and tranny coolers, etc. Looks like he's got all the cool brand name stuff, but my impressions thus far are that it takes one-off hardcore race-type mods to make the cars last in this stuff. Just my thoughts - I don't want to appear callous(sp?), because I'm very glad that he wasn't hurt. You just better not underestimate the difficulty in getting a car to be able to go those kinds of speeds for that length of time, because a failure at those speeds could mean the *end*.
